right after its biggest fight in a quarter-century the chicago teachers union is in on the other one the fresh office strike is now joining a lawsuit to stop a rare pension reform one designed to stop it union leaders from getting to pensions for one job. every step of the way union president karen lewis was there fighting for chicago teachers taking on the mayor and rallying thison to the troops for

seven straight days now that it's ended lewis and the ct you are preparing for a new battle firing a legal shot across the barrel and what could be a constitutional war. we want to change it and retroactively take people's pensions is problematic for us. the union got it wrong taking advantage of the gray area. we told you about this last year a series of reports called pension games we caught top union leaders on leave from the city getting to some * 3 pensions for one job our investigation so outraged politicians in springfield that they passed a law to stop it. they go on leave from the city

and then base their pensions on their much higher union salary that pension reform had rare bipartisan support the teachers' union and other union leaders now say the law went too far. jesse sharkey is the no. 2 guy with the chicago teachers union. what's wrong with it is a couple of things, number one he points to this library assistant whose pension could be cut by more than half under the new law when she took a leave of absence from the city to work for the union her salary doubled she then not only got her city

pension but a second retirement deal for reunion work. house minority leader tom cross sponsored the bill to stop what the library assistant and dozens of other union workers had been doing. she is still going to have a pension that she is entitled to as the library at she's just not getting that second pension working for the teachers' union. this begs the question if they build and received bipartisan support makes a very small flight of100 takes a very small slice without a challenge how well the major reform get done? the

chicago teachers union pension fund is one of many statewide in deep trouble it's only 60 percent funded and a new rule requiring more uniform accounting is even worse dropping the value and have there are many reasons for that the union chief karen lewis makes for a good example. before leaving the union lewis signed teachers earning a salary of $80,000 a year and she has only had to pay 2 per cent of that, it's a benefit that wasn't even questioned during the strike that has to change says some republican lawmakers. >> we are not going to do anything that will make people happy. it's going to be very painful. and because we waited so long to fix it to the problem gets even tougher. where do the

teachers chop? >> teachers like things to be done with us not to us. there are some who do not want to change that system. what we really need is our representatives in springfield to step up. what we don't feel like doing is getting invited to a dinner party to talk about these things to find out that we are the only ones on the menu. we have no further response from careless or the library assistant and a lawsuit late tonight we got a statement from the illinois teachers' retirement system they hope that lawmakers properly fund pensions and that any reform must adhere to the 1970 constitution mayor emanuel says he will not ask taxpayers to pay more into a
